Pilgrims of Hope: Closing of the 8th Provincial Chapter of L’Hermitage and the WCE District

"We walk with confidence, even in the midst of uncertainty. Fear does not paralyze us, because we know that God walks with us. We live our faith as witnesses of love and fraternity, building bridges, sowing peace, and opening paths of reconciliation. We also allow ourselves to be transformed, because pilgrimage is an interior journey as well: conversion, renewal, openness to the Spirit.”
With these words, Brother Provincial Gabriel Villa-Real closed the 8th Provincial Chapter of L’Hermitage and the West Central Europe District, held from June 30 to July 4 at Notre Dame de l’Hermitage.
From this Chapter emerged the new Provincial Council for the next three-year term — the brothers who will accompany the Provincial in governing the Province and the District. The elected brothers are: Xavier Giné, Ramon Rúbies, Jaume Parés, Pau Tristany, Miquel Cubeles, and André Déculty. Brother Brendan Geary, District Superior, also joins the Council as a full member. The Chapter expressed its gratitude to Brother Rafa Escolà, the outgoing councillor, for his years of service “with dedication and simplicity of spirit,” in the words of Brother Gabriel.
The new Council was supported by the active presence of Vicar General Ken McDonald and Councilor João Carlos do Prado. At the closing session, João Carlos thanked the Chapter for the opportunity to share Marist life with the Province and District, and for the privilege of experiencing L’Hermitage and Rosey (Marlhes), places of deep significance for the Marist family. Looking to the future, he encouraged the Marists “not to be afraid to open our doors to welcome others, and not to be afraid to step out of our communities to share with them.”
The Chapter’s theme, Pilgrims of Hope, inspired the delegates to outline a shared journey between laypeople and brothers. Among the questions raised during the reflections — and echoed by Brother Gabriel in his final address — that challenge us as an institution:
· How can we find new ways to communicate effectively with today’s young people and laypeople?
· Are we offering deep and meaningful formation in the Marist charism and spirituality?
· What is the quality and relevance of our presence among young people and laypeople?
· How do we accompany young people and laypeople in their personal and spiritual journeys?
· Are our communities truly open and inclusive?
· What role do senior brothers play in the Province and District, and how is their presence perceived?
· Are we managing our finances and governance in a sustainable, long-term way?
· How are we addressing the challenge of evangelization today? Is it truly a priority for us?
The Chapter included meaningful moments, such as the working day at Le Rosey (where the new Council was elected), prayer times rich in symbolism, and a day dedicated to hearing the voices of the eight lay men and women invited to the Chapter, as well as brothers from various countries who shared their feelings, insights, hopes, and reflections.
A new three-year period (2025–2028) now begins, during which these insights and priorities will be taken into account. It will be a triennium full of challenges in a constantly changing world, while always remembering that, like Marcellin, caring for the children and young people entrusted to us remains at the heart of our mission.
